- Chickenpox is a highly contagious illness caused by primary infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV).
- Chickenpox or chicken pox, also known as varicella.
- An itchy rash of spots that look like blisters can appear all over the body and may be accompanied by flu-like symptoms.

- Kids can be protected from VZV by getting the chickenpox (varicella) vaccine, usually between the ages of 12 to 15 months.
- The best-known signs of chickenpox are: red, itchy rash that initially may look like insect bites, small, liquid-filled blisters that break open and crust over.
- Common sites for the rash include the face, scalp, chest and back.
- The rash may be preceded by or accompanied by: fever, loss of appetite, mild headache, dry cough, irritability.
- The disease is highly contagious and spreads quickly, especially in locations where people are in close contact eg- schools.
- Chickenpox typically requires no medical treatment however the doctor may prescribe an anti-itching medicine for some relief. But for the most part, the disease is allowed to run its course.
- One can relieve the itchiness, fever, and discomfort of chickenpox by: taking baths in cool or lukewarm water every 3 to 4 hours for the first few days, patting the body, eating foods that are cold, soft and easily chewable.
